AI-Driven Tree Analysis Boosts Bark Beetle Detection with Holmen

Forest damages of all kinds are becoming more widespread in the world due to climate change. Combating these damages requires fast and precise action—something traditional methods often struggle to keep up with.

In collaboration with Holmen, we at Arboair have implemented an AI-driven solution to accurately identify damaged and dead trees. By analyzing high-resolution drone images, we can quickly map affected regions and provide forest planners with a clear overview of where interventions are needed. This eliminates the need for manual searches across large areas, allowing forestry teams to act directly where damage is present.

So far, our technology has been used to scan ~40,000 hectares of Holmen's forest, leading to faster damage detection and more efficient forest management.

"It makes our work easier and has a great potential for the industry now and in the future."
Christian Syk, Holmen

Beyond bark beetle infestations, our technology can also be used to map wind-felled trees and monitor forestry activities such as soil preparation and thinning. Additionally, our solution complements satellite-based analyses by providing a more detailed, real-time view at the tree level—enabling faster and more effective action for improved forest management.
